Lead Engineer, Product Development

Duties and Responsibilities

Position Summary:

Develops new products and enhances existing products, from conceptualization and development through finalization and rollout.

We are looking for someone who loves to design. Someone who can think on their feet and work on projects from start to finish. Projects vary from designing "a full chair" to mechanical components. If you are a creative individual who is excited to contribute to designing better products for our end users through engineering, then this position is for you!

Essential Functions:

  • Lead product development projects to ensure technical excellence. Design and develop Manual Wheelchairs that meet established performance criteria, third party certification standards, cost targets, and customer requirements. Optimize functionality, aesthetics, ergonomics, user experience, manufacturability, product cost, and other key performance indicators.
  • Support design and development plans for new product launches. Ensure reliable and timely execution. Continuously improve process from conception, design, and prototype through testing and industrialization.
  • Create and manage technical requirements specifications for new product launches. Ensure requirements achievement through execution of standardized and non-standardized testing. Maintain detailed project documentation such as design reports, concept evaluations, tradeoffs analysis.
  • Work collaboratively with cross-functional teams.
  • Build the capabilities of the product development team. Be an expert in product and industry trends, engineering solutions and best practices, and technology innovation in relevant fields.
  • Create 3D models, drawings, and analysis reports for existing and new products, using 3D Modeling Software systems.
  • Work at a computer for 8+ hours per day.
  • See details of objects and drawings for extended periods of time.
  • Maintain professionalism at all levels in the organization.
  • Maintain regular attendance and meet all deadlines.

Knowledge and Skills Needed

  • Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering or related field.
  • 5+ years of design-related work experience. Experience leading engineering project teams preferred. Experience in medical device development preferred.
  • 3+ years of analysis experience. Strong computation and analytical skills.
  • Strong leadership and communication skills.
  • Strong understanding of how people interface with products and a keen sense for and attention to aesthetics.
  • Strong knowledge and/or experience with mechanical design, manufacturing methods, ergonomics, and cost-effective manufacturing.
  • Knowledge of the mechanics and manufacturing properties of various materials such as aluminum, titanium, steel, carbon fiber, and plastic.
  • Knowledge of machining, extrusion, plating, stamping, welding and fabrication, and plastic molding methods preferred.
  • High competency with 3D Modeling Software systems (preferably SolidWorks) in the creation of complex mechanical models, fabrication drawings, and assembly drawings.
  • Competence with other software applications (e.g. Microsoft Office and basic project management tools).
  • Outstanding time management and problem-solving skills, attention to detail, and commitment to quality. Ability to work on multiple projects at one time and manage changing priorities while meeting deadlines.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
